The Importance of Deep Linking to Search Engine Optimization

If you own a website with multiple pages,chances are only your site's homepage gets the most of your linking efforts priority. While linking to your homepage is important at first stage to get the search engines to know your website and spread the word around it,linking to internal pages finishes the job by getting those pages out of obscurity or supplemental results at best. Therefore,helping your site claims back its lost popularity.

If you seriously consider this route, you will find it just as worthwile investing some efforts builing incoming links to your site's interior pages. The places to haunt for that matter are Blogs,web directories and social bookmarking sites that offer deep links to inner contents. Initially, It does not really matter a lot how high ranked those deep linking directories are. Their task is to save you time and speed up the indexing process by directing search engines like google to those buried deep links in your site that would otherwise escape and remain unknown to them for a long period of time.

How does linking from a high page rank resource make a difference?
For the search engines, each link pointing to an internal page translates into a recommendation. Based on the number of recommendations,search engines like google,yahoo,msn and others assign an equivalent value of points that will ultimately determine a page rank.
The higher the page rank(authority) of the recommending site,the more seriously search engines take its recommendation into consideration. Consequently,a glow of that authority will eventually pass to the recommended page.
More links = More recommendation votes = More points = Authority = Page rank.

Point to mention, search engine algorithms filter which links are naturally gained from those gained unaturally(ex paid links) . So not every link is necessarily a positive vote for your site. Google,in particular,frowns upon paid links purchased from so called link farms. Since many respectable directories also charge more for the time and effort of reviewing site addition requests than making link farm profits, search engines evaluate and take into consideration whether your site is receiving natural links pointing to your internal pages besides the home page,the number of those links,the cateogries they are coming from, etc.
In addition to adding a natural flavor to your links, deep linking gets your internal pages out of the supplemental and gives more exposure to other areas of your site besides just your homepage (ex products page, Faq page,contact page,etc).

Some time ago, search engines would judge internal pages on their own PR merits individually. With current seo trends, it appears that a page’s authority(value derived from accumulated number of deep links[votes]) also passes through to your home page besides other internal pages linked to from your deep linked pages. In fact, the more internal pages,the more foundation for search engines to match associated keywords against. That means deep linking works in a building effect to pass more value to your home page and therefore your site than would be the other way round. Though it is clear that internal pages contribute to the whole site PR, It is unclear they share the PR with the homepage. Page rank is not a set formula out of linking alone, there are factors to it as well.

Keep in mind that it's the PR of the page your are linked from that matters most, the PR of the home page only helps a little more.
Because page rank fluctuates in time and among search engines themselves causing PR to drop occasionally, it may not be a good idea to list based on PR alone. Remember PR is not even decisive in search results, it is just one factor. A page with rank 0 but the right keywords and correct link building structure can show up on top of higher ranked pages. What is most important in the case of a directory submission is the rich and targeted linking of the directory. This is determined by the number and quality of similar links to your exact niche in the most appropriate category. Submission to Vague and irrelevant categories is not as helpful.
